FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017 – Matches – Germany-Cameroon – Match Preview –

  • Germany need just a point to advance to the semis
  • Cameroon must win by two clear goals to reach the last four
  • Cameroon have previously reached the final, the Germans secured third in 2005

After having lost to Chile and drawn with Australia at the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017, Cameroon now find themselves in a difficult position. In order to reach the last four of the tournament, Les Lions Indomptables must not only defeat the reigning world champions, but they also need to do so by two clear goals.

And although, as the cliché goes, anything is possible in football, Die Nationalelf, who only need a point to progress, will certainly fancy their chances of reaching the semi-finals. They will, of course, be keen to finish the group phase with a flourish and, if possible, capture first place in Group B, which will depend on Chile’s result against Australia in Sunday’s other match.

What you need to know
With two group games gone, only one player has scored more than a single goal at Russia 2017: Germany’s Lars Stindl, who obviously sits atop the tournament’s scoring charts. Those strikes also represent the first two international goals for the on-song forward, who only earned his first cap earlier this month. That takes the 28-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach man’s tally for the 2016/17 campaign to 20 goals in 48 matches across all competitions – the best performance of his career.

In three previous meetings, there have been two wins for Germany and a 2-2 draw, when the two nations last played in June 2014. The Germans had not yet claimed the FIFA World Cup™ at that point, but that fact may give them some food for thought, as the last time the African side took on the reigning world champions – Brazil, in 2003 – they obtained an unexpected 1-0 victory. team reporter analysis
Steffen Potter with Germany
During the five major tournaments in which he has participated, Germany coach Joachim Low has always managed to guide his charges to the semi-finals, and a draw on Sunday would see that run continue. So far, his young team have been convincing in Russia, full of enthusiasm and drive against Australia, and resilient and solid versus Chile. It is difficult to predict which 11 players Low will put his faith in for the final group match, but whoever is picked, they will doubtless give their all to ensure their adventure continues.

The clash with Germany looks like a daunting assignment for the Cameroon players, who travelled to Sochi during the evening that followed their disappointing draw with Australia. After having twice fielded the same starting line-up, Hugo Broos will likely stick with the majority of the team that enjoyed some positive moments against the Australians, especially in the second half. They must, however, sort out the nerves they have been suffering from at the start of matches, as Germany will not let them get away with that sort of lapse.

Possible line-ups
Germany: Marc Andre ter Stegen; Matthias Ginter, Shkodran Mustafi, Antonio Rudiger; Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Sebastian Rudy, Marvin Plattenhardt; Julian Brandt, Julian Draxler; Timo Werner

Cameroon: Fabrice Ondoa; Ernest Mabouka, Adolphe Teikeu, Michael Ngadeu Ngadjui, Collins Fai; Sebastien Siani, Arnaud Djoum, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa; Christian Bassogog, Vincent Aboubakar, Benjamin Moukandjo
